Kindergarten lessons

I’m not a fan of baseball. I only saw the article because of the Fark headline:

In the MLB draft, Cardinals plan on picking outfielder so arthritic he can barely get out of bed, and it’s one of the best moves ever

After reading it, it definitely seems the absolutely right thing to do. I don’t know if it’ll make me watch baseball though.

I think we could win this. The commentators from the original run of Battlebots were a bit annoying, so hopefully they’ll find a new pair. The Sklar brothers kept it lively. Maybe James Hyneman will make an appearance. I hear he has a decent robot.

On another note, Jason, you need to plan a road trip… like this weekend.

Physics Colloquium Speaker

Another email went around the physics department looking for colloquium speaker nominations. So I decided to nominate Trevon Logan, an associate professor at the OSU economics department, to come and give a talk about his paper investigating the AP College Football Poll. Here’s an article from Science News daily about his study.

His study is fantastic. It’s basically a HEP-style analysis of college football rankings. I’ve got my whole email nomination below the fold. The key reason to have him come speak for us: he will deepen our understanding of the poll itself and broaden our understanding of what it means to be a Buckeye.

My expectations for the OSU football team’s performance were low. I didn’t want to get psyched up about the championship game like last year. I just wanted to see them play a solid game, maybe keep it close for a few quarters, make a lot of solid defensive plays… but I didn’t even see that :( There was a lack of composure after LSU took the lead. It’s too bad, really. I wanted us to look like competitors just to silence rumors of, “Oh, the big 10 just isn’t a good conference…”

Well, at least Michigan beat Florida last week. And in the best possible way: Michigan pulled out the win in spite of Mike Hart fumbling twice on the goal line. Way to go, Mike Hart. His embarrassment sweetens the win.
