The Black Company

So I started reading Glen Cook’s Black Company series, it’s good.  It’s like real life (for some people these days) but in a fantasy setting.  The story is told from the eyes of the Company’s historian/physician’s point of view.  The story is set such that at the beginning the Company is the protector of a leader who leeches off /abuses his city which they feel morally bad about, although still take his money.  So they abandon him to his fate and leave with this stranger, who of course works for an empire ruled by resurrected tyrants which were sealed away for wanting to control the world.  Anyways I never knew of it as a child and it’s amazing how different it is from the fantasy books I read back then (the 80s).  I think Erikson says it best:

‘With the Black Company series, Glen Cook single-handedly changed the face of fantasy - something a lot of people didn’t notice, and maybe still don’t. He brought the story down to a human level, dispensing with the cliche archetypes of princes, kings, and evil sorcerers. Reading his stuff is like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote’

Who  can argue with an endorsement like that.
