All Know Metal Bands

http://www.omnivoracious.com/2008/07/gather-near-chi.html

Dan Nelson has descended into the Metal underworld to single-handedly collect the names of nearly 51,000 bands, presenting his research in silver ink on black paper–a treatment sometimes difficult to read in natural light, but one that will glow evilly in the black light of a sunless, suburban bedroom.Cloaked in its Necronomicoid binding, AKMB seethes with ancient magic: a volume which may have been “unearthed from a tomb … or from a metal box submerged in desiccated mud.”Open it at your peril, gentle reader.

All Known Metal Bands lists these groups of “Ur-men” in alphabetical order, without comment, and repeats the names in the case more than one band shared the name. From the heroes of Viking Metal (Thor, Thor’s Hammer, Thorr’s Hammer) to Gothic Metal (Black Wytche, Black Witchcraft Savagery, Black Wolf Sacrifice) and beyond, Nelson has assured “those whose ears are never touched by songs of love and weakness” permanent placement in the record of their cülture, and perhaps more importantly, oürs. More of the immortals:

  • Ultra Vomit (2 entries)
  • Dark Morbid Death
  • Guardians of Profane Secrets
  • Lord Goatwarr
  • Lucifer in Love
  • Ulan Bator (?)
  • Violent Marv
  • Leatherwolf
  • Lazarus Sin
  • Necrolust (6 entries, included in nearly two pages of Necro/Nekro variants)

Love Guru

I have never seen movie reviews this bad:

From slate. There are good movies. There are bad movies. There are movies so bad they’re good (though, strangely, not the reverse). And once in a while there is a movie so bad that it takes you to a place beyond good and evil and abandons you there, shivering and alone.

From nyt: To say that the movie is not funny is merely to affirm the obvious. The word “unfunny” surely applies to Mr. Myers’s obnoxious attempts to find mirth in physical and cultural differences but does not quite capture the strenuous unpleasantness of his performance. No, “The Love Guru” is downright antifunny, an experience that makes you wonder if you will ever laugh again.

Rotten tomatoes has more.

Too Much Metal for Reality, Fire at Dethklok

While the actual story is not as good as my title, I like to believe that it was caused by a laser light show and everyone died…..

Homestar Runner

You probably haven’t thought about homestar in years (I know I really hadn’t). But the site is still alive and well. There are now 14 Teen Girl Squad Episodes (and the title of the teen girl squad page is T33n G1rl Squ4dx0rx!!). If you’ve never seen teen girl squad, I highly recommend it, especially the first one. The Strong Bad emails are still updated, including the most recent one, about cereal called Specially Marked. In it, Strongbad says,

You should avoid cereals that have stuff grown in Iowa. It’s better to look for cereals named after sound effects, like “pops”, “smacks”, “puffs”, and “gunshots in a crowded mall”.

At first glance, it looks like the sight has still got it.

Geek Culture

From slahdot, I found an nyt op-ed about the growth of geek culture over the last 30 years.

Article

There isn’t a lot of profound insight. It’s just a list of ways in which geek culture has risen as an acceptable alternative to other major social groups (jocks, preps, etc), and that it wasn’t there before. I guess I’d claim that it’s always been there, but previously lacked the cohesion it has now. I agree with the article that one of the key instruments in galvanizing geek culture is the PC and the computing revolution.

I didn’t put a link to the slashdot comments, but I imagine they are flame-tastic.

New NIN Album - The Slip

Posted in art on May 6, 2008 by 8a11z

So I downloaded the completely FREE new NIN album yesterday. It’s actually pretty good, I’ll admit I had low expectations because of the completely free nature but I would say that I would in fact have paid $5 for it much like Ghost I-IV (which is a good workday listen but only has maybe 5 really standout tracks, several are great, that classic NIN where he just hits an amazing melody/rhythm and just let’s it grow). So why only $5? Well for one thing it’s a pretty short album (10 tracks) and some tracks(4-5) are just alright, plus I’m cheap. It’s not as good as Year Zero (which I think was awesome and totally worth the $8 I paid for it) but it’s still pretty good.

Also Discipline is a great song, pick up the download if only for that.

Hentai Video Games

Nothing here is explicitly NSFW but exercise caution. Reminds me of that old school Apple IIe Pr0n that came on unlabeled floppies with my first computer….. What did underage people do without the internet?
